WGLL Volunteer Activities

Willow Glen Little League is an all-volunteer league. The over 10,000 volunteer hours that league families put in each year are what makes Willow Glen Little League successful. The WGLL volunteer requirements for each family with players in the league are as follows:

  • One snack shack shift coordinated by the team parent. Snack shack duty is mandatory; families cannot opt out.
  • Volunteer a minimum of 4 hours of time per family, assisting with one of the activities below.

** Families may opt out of 4-hour volunteer requirement by paying the $200 fee to WGLL.**

Umpire - Umpires are trained and outfitted by Willow Glen Little League, and are responsible for umpiring games at the Minor AA and above. We are happy to schedule assignments around whatever schedule you may have, and it doesn't matter if you are able to umpire 3 games or 50!

Manager - This position is the head coach of a specific team within Willow Glen Little League. The manager essentially runs the baseball side of the team. The manager is responsible for planning and running team practices, making out game-day lineups, and managing the team during games. This position is not as intimidating as it may seem, especially at the T-Ball and Minor A levels! You always have at least a couple of assistant coaches who are there to help you out and cover for you when you need to miss a practice or game due to other commitments.

Team Parent - The Team Parent is the Manager's right-hand man or woman, and is a vital component of the team. Whereas the Manager typically runs the baseball part of the team, the Team Parent runs the administrative side. The Team Parent is responsible for organizing snack schedules, coordinating the team's turns in running the snack shack, picture day, planning team parties, and helping the Manager contact parents when practices or games are cancelled. The team parent, working with the League's Volunteer Coordinators, also helps ensure that their team's volunteer requirements are met.

Coach - The coach is an assistant to the manager and helps with all baseball aspects of the team. Coaches are vital parts of any team, and are often called upon to help run practices and games when the manager is not available. Note that in Minor AA and above only 2 official coaches are allowed on the field of play, but that doesn't stop additional "coaches" from helping out during practices.

Scorekeeper - At the AA level and above, Scorekeepers are an important part of each game we play during the season. Willow Glen Little League uses the online scorekeeping application called GameChanger. It can be used through an iOS device. This is a fun activity and keeps you occupied during the game. Furthermore, you are helping the coaches and the league measure how we are doing developing our players.

Field Setup – Before games, fields must be prepped for the upcoming game. Duties include dragging the field, watering down the infield, chalking the lines, etc. The same is done once the games are completed.

Field Maintenance - Volunteering for field maintenance simply means that you'll volunteer to help mow the grass, prepare the big baseball diamond, etc. one or more times during the course of the season. You can also volunteer to help on field clean-up day before the season starts. We'll coordinate an overall field maintenance schedule, and work around your schedule to find a day/time where you can help make our ballpark sparkle!

Opening Day - Opening Day volunteers are responsible for arriving early to help set up for Opening Day, help serve lunch during Opening Day, or perform one of countless other tasks to help make WGLL Opening Day a day to remember.

Closing Day - Closing Day volunteers perform the same sort of tasks as Opening Day, and it's a great way to help the league cap off a memorable season for our children.

Night Game Volunteer - As we did last year, Willow Glen Little League is having 2 night games. You can volunteer to help setup and tear down for one or both of these events.

BBQ - Got the itch to get behind the BBQ? Then this volunteer opportunity is for you! Spend 3 hours behind the BBQ grill and help fill the hungry stomachs around the park.

Other - I have a skill or service that is not listed above and would be of value to WGLL.

Opt-Out - Most leagues in our district have such an option to emphasize the importance and need of volunteerism.  However, if you're not able to volunteer for any of the above assignments, you may select to opt out by paying $200 as part of your registration fees.
